Oasis 2013

Palm Canyon, Indian Canyons Tribal Park, Palm Springs, California

On a grey January Vancouver day, an opportunity presented itself to go down to Palm Desert with a fellow artist to spend some time painting in the desert.

The clarity of the light in contrast to the grey skies of Vancouver was striking and triggered a whole new palette. Indian Canyon Oasis is truly that, a rich fertile spot in a desert landscape. The way the stark light fragmented the foliage was a visual matrix. The act of drawing directly from landscape facilitates a natural selection of information. It is about memory and experience versus geographical rendering. The initial work was done on site with paper and pastel. Back in the studio, the drawings are developed into paintings and the work is further distilled.
